Speaking during a recent UNSC session, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN emphasized that international peace and security structures must become more democratic, accountable, and representative of the wider UN membership.
1. Key Highlights of Pakistan’s UN Address
Opposition to Permanent Expansion: Islamabad reiterated its stance that adding new permanent members would only deepen institutional paralysis within the Security Council, advocating instead for an expansion focused exclusively on elected, non-permanent seats.
Abolishing the Veto: Highlighting structural inequality in global decision-making, Pakistan labeled the veto power a "privilege for none" and called for its phased removal to ensure fair representation for developing regions.
Focus on Kashmir and Peaceful Dispute Resolution: The delegation leveraged the platform to stress the urgent need for international backing toward the peaceful settlement of the long-standing Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with relevant UNSC resolutions.
2. Shaping Multilateral Diplomacy
As global geopolitical tensions shift, Pakistan’s active engagement in UN forums highlights its growing emphasis on multilateralism, international law, and fair diplomatic frameworks. By championing the rights of middle and lower-income states, Islamabad continues to shape discussions around equitable global governance.
